Lara Martins


Lara Martins held her studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, where she completed a degree in singing, with the highest rating scholarship under a scholarship by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Once the course was finished she was immediately invited to join the group of soloists at the Centre National d’Artistes Lyriques (CNIPAL) where she was soloist during the 2002/2003 season.

As opera singer she performed, among other places, at Theatres at Modena, Ferrara, Piacenza as Fünf Magd (Elektra by Richard Strauss) under the direction of Maestro Gustav Kuhn; Teatro Comunale di Bolzano, Kristin (Miss Julie by Philipe Boesmans) directed by Joana Carneiro; Opera National de Bordeaux, Sofia (Il Signor Bruschino by Rossini); Clarissa of Die Drei Pintos by Weber and Princess Hirvaia (Dick Whinttington, Offenbach) for the Bloomsbury Theatre (London); Toured the UK with Adina in L'Elisir d'Amore for the Swansea City Opera, Flaminia in Il Mondo della Luna by Haydn for Opera East, Opera de Marseille, Blondchen (Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Mozart), Teatro da Trindade, Susanna (Le Nozze di Figaro); Rivoli Theatre, Despina (Cosi fan Tutte); CAM of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation as Paracha (Mavra, Stravinsky); International Music Festival of the Algarve, Madame Siberklang (Die Schauspieldirektor, Mozart).

Participates regularly in Teatro Nacional de São Carlos seasons, where she performed in roles as Queen of the Night (Die Zauberflöte), Elvira (L'Italiana in Algeri), Elena (Il capello di Paglia di Firenze by Nino Rota), Princess (Puss in Boots, Xavier Montsalvatge), Voice in the Church/ saleswoman/Female (The Nose, Schostakovich), and more recently Cunegonde (Candide, Bernstein) in the Largo Festival and 2014 New Year Concert, broadcast live on RTP 2.

In concert she performed at the Kremlin in Moscow (Exultate et Jubilate, Mozart) and Glazunov Art Gallery (Salve Regina, Schubert), International Music Festival Tibor Varga in Switzerland (Bachianas Brasileiras by Heitor Villa Lobos); Opera of Marseilles (Seven Spanish Folksongs of Falla), Avignon Opera (Soloist at the New Year concert); Vilar Floral Hall (Royal Opera House, Covent Garden), Opera de Marseille and Toulon Opera.

In Portugal, regularly collaborates with leading national orchestras and appears frequently in recital with pianist João Paulo Santos, with presentations at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation/Cycle New Interpreters, Teatro Nacional de São Carlos and major music festivals in Portugal.

Lara Martins was awarded several prizes as the Donizetti Award by singer Fiorenza Cossotto at the International Singing Contest Jaumme Aragall in Spain, and 1st Prize in Estoril Music Interpretation Contest/El Corte Inglés Prize.

Currently plays the role of Carlotta Giudicelli in the musical The Phantom of the Opera on stage at Her Majesty's Theater in London.

She has recorded for RAI, RTP and Radio Antena 2.
