Versatile and passionate, Portuguese violinist Pedro Meireles has developed a reputation in his homeland and across Europe as one of today’s most exciting young musicians.
Three-time winner of Portuguese Radio and Television (RTP) Young Musician Award (1998, 2000 violin, 2004 viola) and winner of more than 30 other prizes. Pedro is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, where he studied with musicians of the highest calibre, such as Maxim Vengerov, Lydia Mordkovitch, Norbert Brainin, Sergey Kravchenko, Thomas Brandis and Vadim Brodsky. He holds teaching diplomas in both violin and viola from the R.A.M, a Masters in performance and a DipRAM with the prestigious J & A Beare Award.
As a soloist, Pedro has innumerable concerto performances to his name, performing with orchestras including Orquestra Sinfonica Simon Bolivar de Venezuela, the Gulbenkian Orchestra, Portuguese Symphonic Orchestra, Cambridge Orchestra, Macedonia Philharmonia, Orquestra Classica da Madeira, and in festivals such as the Paganini, Berio and Nono Festivals (London), International Viola Congress (Porto), Festival ao Largo and Dias da Música (Lisbon).
His busy chamber music schedule has included concerts and tours across Europe, India, and Canada and recordings for Sony, Naxos, Numérica and Harmos Records, performing with artists such as Henning Kraggerud (violin), Giovani Guzzo (violin), Diemut Poppen (viola) Johannes Moser (cello), Kyril Zlotnikov (cello), Hansjörg Schellenberger (oboe), Martin Frost (clarinet), Andrei Diev (piano), and the Kreutzer and Alberni Quartets. An advocate of contemporary music, Pedro has commissioned, premiered and recorded new works by composers such as Mark-Anthony Turnage, Oliver Weaspy, Isabel Soveral and Jordan Hunt, recorded Sergio Azevedo’s Concert for 2 violins (released 2015), and and a CD of Pedro Teixeira da Silva’s chamber music (to be released in 2019).
Previous positions have included Assistant Director and Concertmaster of the Symphony Orchestra of India, Concertmaster of the London Orchestra da Camera and Assistant Concertmaster of the Calouste Gulbenkian Orchestra. Pedro currently holds the position of Principal Concertmaster of the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra, and can frequently be heard on Portuguese National Radio.
Mr. Meireles is a passionate teacher and has taught and given masterclasses worldwide, including in North and South America, Asia, and Europe. He was appointed Associate of the Royal Academy of Music in 2016 for his outstanding musical contributions.
